  Author: Clyde John What is Kava? The national drink of Fiji has been a staple beverage for many Polynesians used for medicinal and recreational purposes. The locals call it Sakau derived from the Polynesian word “awa,” which means bitter and is typically served during a relaxation ceremony as a muddy and bitter drink. It is harvested from the roots of a shrub which are ground down to a fine powder then it is filtered to a tea-like beverage and drank in coconut shells. Effects of Kava According to the ADF , Kava is a depressant   drug, which produces a slower response between the brain and the body. Kava’s hypnotic effects can be attributed to Kavalactone, a class of lactone compounds found in the kava shrub said to have various psychotropic effects, including sedative/hypnotic activities.
